About Uwema Initiative Uganda

From grassroots beginnings to holistic community transformation

Our Story: From a Football Pitch to a Movement of Hope

In the dusty fields of Isingiro District, where refugee children from Oruchinga Settlement played alongside host community youth, a simple game of football sparked something extraordinary. What began in 2020 as Sports Club Lions - a grassroots effort to unite divided communities through sport - quickly revealed deeper needs beyond the pitch.

"We saw that sports could bring people together, but we also saw the pain, trauma, and challenges that needed more than just a game."

Executive Director Mrs. Kihembo Pollin, with over 10 years of experience in community health and empowerment, recognized that sports could break down barriers, but also saw the profound challenges facing both refugees and their host neighbors: trauma from conflict, economic hardship, limited healthcare, and environmental pressures. Drawing on her Master's in Public Health and extensive experience with reputable organizations, she envisioned a more comprehensive approach.

By 2021, her vision expanded. What started with footballs and jerseys evolved into Uwema Initiative Uganda - a comprehensive community-based organization dedicated to holistic transformation.

"Uwema," meaning "well-being" in the local dialect, became our guiding principle: strengthening lives, restoring hope, and building resilience, one community at a time.

Present: 4 Thematic Programs

Today, Uwema Initiative Uganda stands as a beacon of hope in Isingiro District, implementing integrated programs that address the interconnected challenges of refugees and host communities. Our community-led approach ensures sustainable impact and lasting transformation.

Our Philosophy: "True development comes from within the community. We don't bring solutions - we help communities discover and implement their own."

Since our founding, we have grown from a small sports club to a recognized community-based organization with four core thematic programs. We have reached over 2,000 direct beneficiaries, trained 350+ youth in vocational skills, provided 500+ mental health counseling sessions, and planted 5,000+ trees. Our work continues to expand, driven by the needs of the communities we serve and the dedication of our team, volunteers, and partners. We believe that sustainable change happens when communities own their development, and we are committed to walking alongside refugees and host communities on their journey toward resilience, dignity, and hope.

Sports for Development & Peace

Using sports as a tool for psychosocial healing, social cohesion, and talent development among refugee and host community youth. Our programs include football tournaments, volleyball leagues, and life skills training. We create safe spaces where youth from different backgrounds can interact, build friendships, and develop leadership skills that transcend community divides. Through regular training sessions, friendly matches, and annual tournaments, we bring together youth from both communities, fostering understanding, respect, and friendship. Our trained coaches not only teach sports skills but also facilitate discussions on teamwork, conflict resolution, and goal setting. We have seen countless examples of youth who started as strangers on opposite sides of the pitch become teammates, friends, and advocates for peace in their communities.

Mental Health & Psychosocial Support

Providing counseling, peer support groups, and trauma healing workshops for refugees and host community members affected by conflict and displacement. Reducing stigma around mental health issues. Our trained counselors offer individual and group therapy sessions, while community-based support groups provide safe spaces for sharing experiences. We also conduct awareness campaigns to educate communities about mental health and available support services. Our mental health program recognizes that healing is a journey, not a destination. We provide culturally-sensitive counseling services delivered by trained community counselors who understand the local context. Our peer support groups create spaces where survivors can share their stories, find validation, and support each other. We also train community health workers to identify signs of mental distress and provide basic psychosocial first aid. Through our awareness campaigns, we are gradually breaking down the stigma surrounding mental health in refugee and host communities.

Our program includes seed funding, mentorship, and market linkages to help participants establish and grow their businesses. We particularly focus on women and youth-led enterprises to promote gender equality and youth empowerment. Our vocational training centers provide hands-on skills development in high-demand trades. We don't just teach technical skills; we also provide business management training, financial literacy education, and marketing support. Graduates of our program receive startup toolkits and are connected to local markets. Our mentorship program pairs new entrepreneurs with experienced business owners who provide ongoing guidance and support. We have seen women who were previously dependent on aid become self-reliant business owners employing others in their communities.

Climate Action & Environmental Protection

Promoting sustainable agriculture, tree planting, and environmental conservation practices to build climate resilience. Environmental clubs in schools and community clean-up campaigns. We train communities in climate-smart agriculture techniques, establish tree nurseries, and promote renewable energy solutions. Our environmental clubs in schools engage youth in conservation activities, while community clean-up campaigns improve sanitation and environmental health. We also conduct awareness workshops on climate change adaptation and mitigation strategies. Our climate action program addresses the urgent environmental challenges facing Isingiro District, including deforestation, soil degradation, and water scarcity. We train farmers in sustainable agricultural practices such as crop rotation, composting, and water harvesting. Our tree planting initiatives have established community woodlots and fruit tree orchards that provide both environmental and economic benefits. We promote energy-saving cookstoves to reduce demand for charcoal and firewood. Through our school environmental clubs, we are nurturing a new generation of environmental stewards who understand the importance of protecting our planet.

From Refugee to Entrepreneur

Sarah, a refugee from South Sudan, joined our tailoring program with hopes of supporting her three children. Through comprehensive training in tailoring and business management, she gained the skills needed to start her own enterprise. Today, Sarah runs a successful tailoring business that employs two other women from her community. Her business not only provides sustainable income for her family but also contributes to the local economy. "Uwema gave me more than skills - they gave me hope and a future for my family," she says proudly. Sarah's journey from dependency to self-reliance is an inspiration to many. She now serves as a mentor to other women in the program, sharing her knowledge and experience. Her business has grown steadily, and she recently invested in an additional sewing machine to expand her production capacity. Sarah's children are now attending school regularly, and she has been able to improve her family's living conditions. Her story demonstrates the transformative power of economic empowerment when combined with determination and support.

"Before Uwema, I struggled to provide for my children. Now I have a business that supports my family and helps other women in my community. This program changed our lives completely."
Mental Health Support

Healing Through Community Support

John fled conflict in his home country, arriving in Uganda with deep psychological wounds and trauma. For months, he struggled with nightmares, anxiety, and social isolation. Through our mental health program, John joined a peer support group and received individual counseling. The safe space to share his experiences and connect with others who understood his pain became a turning point in his healing journey. Today, John is not only healed but has become a mental health advocate, facilitating support groups for other trauma survivors in his community. John's transformation is remarkable. He has emerged from the shadows of his traumatic past to become a beacon of hope for others. As a peer counselor, he uses his own experience to connect with and support others who are suffering. He has facilitated over 20 support group sessions and has individually mentored numerous trauma survivors. His empathy, patience, and genuine care have made him one of the most trusted and respected members of the support network.

"The support groups helped me find my voice again. I learned I wasn't alone in my suffering, and that realization was the first step toward healing. Now I help others find the same healing I found."
Sports Unity

Building Bridges Through Sports

David from the host community and Peter, a refugee from a neighboring country, were brought together through our Sports Club Lions. Initially wary of each other due to cultural differences and preconceived notions, they found common ground on the football field. As teammates, they learned to communicate, trust, and support each other. What started as teammates became a genuine friendship that bridged cultural divides. Their friendship became an example to their communities, showing that peaceful coexistence is possible and beneficial for everyone. Today, David and Peter are not just teammates but brothers. They train together, study together, and have become advocates for unity in their respective communities. They have spoken at community dialogues about their experience, challenging stereotypes and encouraging others to look beyond differences. Their story has inspired many other youth from both communities to participate in our sports programs, creating a ripple effect of reconciliation and friendship.

"On the football field, we're just teammates working toward a common goal. Sports broke down the barriers between us and showed us we have more in common than different. Now we're not just teammates - we're friends and brothers."
