In the dusty fields of Isingiro District, where refugee children from Oruchinga Settlement played alongside host community youth, a simple game of football sparked something extraordinary. What began in 2020 as Sports Club Lions - a grassroots effort to unite divided communities through sport - quickly revealed deeper needs beyond the pitch.
"We saw that sports could bring people together, but we also saw the pain, trauma, and challenges that needed more than just a game."
Executive Director Mrs. Kihembo Pollin, with over 10 years of experience in community health and empowerment, recognized that sports could break down barriers, but also saw the profound challenges facing both refugees and their host neighbors: trauma from conflict, economic hardship, limited healthcare, and environmental pressures. Drawing on her Master's in Public Health and extensive experience with reputable organizations, she envisioned a more comprehensive approach.
By 2021, her vision expanded. What started with footballs and jerseys evolved into Uwema Initiative Uganda - a comprehensive community-based organization dedicated to holistic transformation.
"Uwema," meaning "well-being" in the local dialect, became our guiding principle: strengthening lives, restoring hope, and building resilience, one community at a time.
Our Evolution Timeline:
Today, Uwema Initiative Uganda stands as a beacon of hope in Isingiro District, implementing integrated programs that address the interconnected challenges of refugees and host communities. Our community-led approach ensures sustainable impact and lasting transformation.
Our Philosophy: "True development comes from within the community. We don't bring solutions - we help communities discover and implement their own."
Since our founding, we have grown from a small sports club to a recognized community-based organization with four core thematic programs. We have reached over 2,000 direct beneficiaries, trained 350+ youth in vocational skills, provided 500+ mental health counseling sessions, and planted 5,000+ trees. Our work continues to expand, driven by the needs of the communities we serve and the dedication of our team, volunteers, and partners. We believe that sustainable change happens when communities own their development, and we are committed to walking alongside refugees and host communities on their journey toward resilience, dignity, and hope.
